Stop burning your ad budget. Learn the most common Google Ads mistakes that waste money and how to fix them for better ROAS.
According to WordStream's 2025 benchmarks, the average Google Ads account wastes 76% of its budget on search terms that never convert. That's not a typo, three-quarters of most ad spend is thrown away.
At Refrakt Digital, we've audited hundreds of Google Ads accounts across Essex, London, and Dubai. The same mistakes appear again and again. Here's what they are and how to stop the bleeding.
Mistake 1: No Negative Keywords
This is the single biggest cause of wasted ad spend. Without negative keywords, Google shows your ads for irrelevant searches that will never convert.
Real examples we've seen:
- A plumber paying for clicks on "plumber salary" and "plumber apprenticeship"
- An aesthetics clinic appearing for "Botox training course"
- A web design agency getting clicks for "free website builder"
The fix:
- Add negative keywords BEFORE launching any campaign
- Review your Search Terms report weekly, add new negatives from actual searches
- Build a master negative keyword list for your account: jobs, free, DIY, training, salary, courses, how to become
- Use negative keyword lists at account level so they apply across all campaigns
Mistake 2: Sending Traffic to the Wrong Page
Your ad promises one thing. The landing page delivers something completely different. The visitor leaves. You pay for the click.
Common offenders:
- Homepage, Too generic, no clear call to action
- Contact page, No context about the service they searched for
- Blog posts, Informational content when they want to buy
The fix:
Every ad group should link to a dedicated landing page that matches the search intent exactly. If someone searches "lip fillers Essex", they should land on a page specifically about lip fillers in Essex, not your homepage.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Match Types
Google's match types determine how closely a search query must match your keyword. Using only broad match without monitoring is like leaving your front door open and hoping only friends walk in.
Match type breakdown:
| Match Type | What Happens | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| Broad Match | Google shows ads for loosely related searches | High waste potential |
| Phrase Match | Ads show for searches containing your phrase | Moderate, more controlled |
| Exact Match | Ads show only for very close variations | Low waste, lower volume |
The fix:
- Start with phrase and exact match for proven keywords
- Only use broad match with Smart Bidding AND a robust negative keyword list
- Monitor Search Terms reports religiously when using broad match
Mistake 4: No Conversion Tracking
If you're not tracking conversions, you're flying blind. Google can't optimise for what it can't measure, and you can't tell what's working.
What to track:
- Form submissions
- Phone calls (use call tracking numbers)
- Live chat conversations
- Email clicks
- Purchases (for ecommerce)
The fix:
Set up Google Ads conversion tracking AND Google Analytics goals. Use Google Tag Manager to deploy tracking without needing developer help. Verify conversions are recording correctly before scaling spend.
Mistake 5: Set and Forget Campaigns
Google Ads is not a set-it-and-forget-it platform. Campaigns need weekly attention at minimum.
Weekly optimisation checklist:
- Review Search Terms, add negatives, find new keyword ideas
- Check ad performance, pause underperformers, test new variants
- Adjust bids, increase on profitable keywords, decrease on expensive ones
- Monitor quality scores, improve ads and landing pages for low-scoring keywords
- Check device performance, mobile and desktop often need different bid adjustments
Mistake 6: Poor Ad Copy
Generic ads get generic results. If your ad looks like every competitor's, you'll struggle to stand out.
Before (generic):
"Marketing Agency | Digital Marketing Services | Contact Us Today"
After (specific):
"Google Ads for Essex Clinics | 300% Average ROAS | Free Audit This Week"
The fix:
- Include specific numbers and results
- Mention your location and target audience
- Add urgency or a clear offer
- Use all available ad extensions (sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets)
Mistake 7: Wrong Bidding Strategy
Google offers multiple bidding strategies, and the wrong choice can drain your budget fast.
Bidding strategy guide:
| Strategy | Best For | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|
| Manual CPC | Full control, small budgets | Time-intensive |
| Target CPA | Lead generation campaigns | Needs 30+ conversions/month |
| Target ROAS | Ecommerce with clear revenue data | Needs significant conversion data |
| Maximize Clicks | Research and testing phases | Can attract low-quality traffic |
| Maximize Conversions | Established campaigns with tracking | Can overspend without a cap |
The fix:
Start with Manual CPC or Maximize Clicks during the learning phase. Switch to Target CPA or Target ROAS once you have at least 30 conversions per month.
