69% of Google searches in 2025 ended without a click, up from 56% in 2024. ChatGPT now serves over 800 million users every week. The buyer who used to Google your service is increasingly asking an AI instead.
If the AI doesn't cite you, you don't exist in that answer, regardless of where you rank on Google. Your competitor with the worse website can quietly become the default recommendation, simply because they have structured their content and citation footprint in a way the model can extract and trust.
This guide is about fixing that. It's written for business owners in the UK and Dubai, not for marketing agencies, not for technical SEOs, not for American software companies. Real steps. Honest about what works, what's overhyped and what's worth your time.
Throughout this guide you'll see links to our digital marketing glossary if a term is unfamiliar.
What Is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation, the practice of structuring your content and online presence so that AI-powered tools, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and others, cite your business as the answer when someone asks a question relevant to what you do.
How traditional search worked: a user searches, Google returns a list of links, the user clicks, and visits your website. Your job was to rank.
How AI search works: a user asks a question. The AI synthesises an answer, cites the sources it used, and the user may or may not click through. Your job is to be a source the AI quotes.
The AI is now the first point of contact between your potential customer and information about your industry. If you're not in the answer, the conversation starts without you, and very often it ends without you too.
The key insight most businesses miss: AEO is not about ranking higher, it's about being the source the AI trusts enough to quote. Those are two different jobs with significant overlap but very different finishing moves.
"Your Google ranking and your AI citation are not the same thing. A business can rank third on Google and be cited first by ChatGPT. Or rank first on Google and never appear in an AI answer at all."
AEO vs SEO vs GEO, What's Actually the Difference?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). Getting your website to rank in Google's traditional blue-link results. Still essential, it's the foundation everything else sits on. Without good SEO, you have nothing for an AI engine to find and trust in the first place.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation). The umbrella discipline. Getting cited by any AI-powered answer engine, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot, voice assistants. Builds on SEO but requires additional content structuring, authority signals and citation building.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation). A subset of AEO. Specifically focused on how your content is structured for inclusion in generative AI output, semantic chunking, content density, the 50-word rule (opening every section with a clean 40, 60 word answer an LLM can extract directly).
LLMO / AISO. Industry synonyms for AEO. Same work, different labels depending on which agency or platform is using the term.
The honest summary: SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you cited. GEO is how you structure content to make citation more likely. You need all three, in that order.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in Google | Get cited by AI | Structure for AI extraction |
| Where | Google search results | AI-generated answers | Inside generative responses |
| How | Keywords, backlinks, technical | Authority, structure, citations | Content density, chunking, schema |
| Timeline | 3, 6 months | 3, 6 months | Immediate structural changes |
| Still needed? | Yes, foundation | Yes, the new layer | Yes, inside AEO |
Why This Matters Right Now (Not in Six Months)
The numbers that matter. 69% of Google searches in 2025 ended without a click, up from 56% in 2024. ChatGPT now sits at 800 million weekly active users as of early 2026. Perplexity has crossed into mainstream professional adoption, especially among technical and high-value B2B buyers. Google AI Overviews now appear above all organic results for an increasing proportion of searches.
The buyer behaviour shift. 45% of B2B buyers now use AI tools to research vendors before they ever contact sales. Gartner forecasts traditional search volume will drop by roughly 25% by the end of 2026 as buyers move to AI-led research. And the traffic that does come through AI engines converts at around 5x the rate of traditional organic, because it arrives pre-qualified by the AI's recommendation.
The window argument. In most UK and Dubai markets almost no businesses have done any AEO work yet. The bar for being cited by AI engines is currently low. That will change. The businesses that build this now will be much harder to displace in 12 months than they are today.
Dubai specifically. The UAE has one of the highest smartphone penetration rates in the world. AI search adoption among Dubai's professional and business audience is accelerating faster than in most Western markets. For businesses in DIFC, Business Bay and JLT, your buyers are already using AI to research before they contact you.
Essex and the UK. UK buyers are increasingly using AI for high-consideration purchases, professional services, significant B2B decisions, specialist products. For tradesmen, aesthetics clinics and professional services firms across Essex, your competitors are not doing this yet. That's the opportunity.
"The businesses doing AEO now will own the AI answers in their market in 12 months. The ones that wait will be optimising for a search engine their buyers have already moved on from."
The Five AI Engines Your Business Needs to Be Cited By
You don't need a separate strategy for each. The core AEO work, authoritative content, structured data, citation building, benefits all five simultaneously.
- 01
Google AI Overviews
Currently the highest priority for most UK and Dubai businesses. Appears above all organic results for a growing proportion of searches. Draws heavily from Google's existing index, strong SEO is a prerequisite. Focus: structured content, E-E-A-T signals, FAQ schema, featured snippet optimisation.
- 02
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
800 million weekly users. Pulls from its training data plus real-time web search via Browse. Focus: brand mentions across trusted third-party sources, Wikipedia presence for established brands, Clutch and GoodFirms profiles, authoritative content.
- 03
Perplexity
The fastest-growing AI search engine among professional buyers. Cites sources directly and explicitly, higher conversion rates than other AI platforms. Focus: recent, well-structured content from authoritative domains, direct answers to specific questions.
- 04
Microsoft Copilot (Bing-powered)
Powers AI search across Microsoft's entire ecosystem including LinkedIn integration, significant for B2B. Focus: Bing indexing, LinkedIn presence, structured content.
- 05
Gemini (Google)
Google's AI assistant, increasingly integrated into Google Search, Google Workspace and Android. Focus: overlaps significantly with Google AI Overviews optimisation.
What Actually Makes AI Engines Cite You?
Based on Princeton University GEO research from 2024 testing 10,000 queries, and AirOps research across thousands of AI-generated responses, these are the signals that consistently predict citation. Build for these, not for keyword density.
Expert quotes and attribution
LLMs use quotation marks and attribution as a proxy for credibility. Content that includes named expert quotes, with name, title and organisation, is cited significantly more often than content without them. This is why named bylines matter. "Vicki Mahoney, Founder of Refrakt Digital, says..." outperforms anonymous copy.
Statistics and data points
Factual density signals to AI that content is worth citing. Specific numbers, "69% of searches", "800 million users", "30% increase in engagements", make content more citation-worthy than generalised claims.
Inline citations
Content that references and links to other authoritative sources creates a chain of trust that AI engines respond to. You are signalling that your content is built on verified information, not generated claims.
The 50-word rule
Open every major section with a clean 40, 60 word answer to the question that section addresses. LLMs extract these opening answers directly. If your content buries the answer after three paragraphs of context, it won't get extracted.
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness
The signals Google introduced and AI engines have adopted. Named authors, credentials, first-hand case studies and consistent brand presence across trusted sources all contribute. Learn more about E-E-A-T in our glossary.
Consistent brand mentions across trusted third-party sources
This is LLM citation building in practice. The more your brand name appears, accurately and consistently, across Clutch, GoodFirms, Trustpilot, industry publications, press coverage and authoritative directories, the more AI engines learn to trust and cite you.
Recent content wins
Adding the current year to titles, meta descriptions and content increases citation likelihood. AI engines weight recent content more heavily, especially Perplexity.
Earned media beats brand-owned content
Omniscient Digital's analysis of 23,387 AI citations found roughly 74% of them came from earned media, editorial articles, third-party reviews, Reddit threads, YouTube videos, not from a brand's own website. You can write the cleanest service page in the world, but if no independent source corroborates your expertise, AI engines will quote the source that does. Build your owned content and your earned mentions in parallel.
Cross-source consensus
The Princeton GEO paper (KDD 2024) measured a 2.8x citation boost when multiple independent sources said the same thing about a brand. AI engines look for corroboration before they confidently recommend. One mention is anecdote. Five aligned mentions across Clutch, Crunchbase, a press feature and two Reddit threads is a pattern the model trusts.
The listicle effect
An Ahrefs study of 17 million AI citations found 43.8% of product and service recommendations come from "Best X for Y" comparison articles. Being included on the right roundups in your category, "best web design agencies in Essex", "top SEO agencies in Dubai", "best fractional CMOs UK", is one of the highest-leverage citation moves available. Pitch yourself into them.
Reddit's outsized weight
SE Ranking's platform study found 46.7% of Perplexity's top citations originate on Reddit. Reddit threads where your category is genuinely discussed, by real users, with real product and service names, drive a disproportionate share of AI answers. Showing up in those conversations honestly, no marketing language, no link drops, is one of the few channels where small effort moves the needle fast.
What doesn't work
Keyword stuffing, a measured -9% citation rate in the Princeton research. AI engines detect unnatural keyword density through perplexity scores and actively deprioritise it.
"AI engines don't reward the best-ranking page. They reward the most trustworthy, clearly structured and well-cited source they can find."
The AEO Checklist, 14 Actions for Your Business
This is the practical implementation list. Work through these in order, the earlier ones have the most impact and several can be done today. Your progress is saved locally in your browser.
Do this first, 30 seconds
Open ChatGPT or Perplexity right now and ask: "best [your service] in [your city]".
If your business doesn't appear, that's your starting line. If a competitor appears and you don't, that's market share moving without you. If nobody appears, you've just found an open category. This single test will tell you more about your AEO position than any audit report.
LLM Citation Building, How to Get Your Business Into AI Training Data and Real-Time Results
What it actually is. LLM citation building is the practice of getting your brand mentioned accurately and consistently across the sources that AI engines pull from when generating answers. There are two distinct tracks, and you need both.
Track 01
Training data citations
AI models like ChatGPT are trained on large datasets of web content. The more your brand appears, accurately and in context, across authoritative sources, the more likely the model is to include you in answers even without real-time search.
Where to build it
- Wikipedia entry (for established brands)
- Crunchbase company profile
- Press coverage in indexed publications
- Industry association mentions
- Academic or research citations
- Guest content on high-authority domains
Track 02
Real-time citations
Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT with Browse all conduct real-time web searches to supplement or replace training data. These citations are more volatile but more immediately actionable.
Where to build it
- Clutch, GoodFirms, Trustpilot, G2 verified reviews
- Yellow Pages UAE, Dubai Chamber (UAE)
- Yell.com, FreeIndex (UK)
- Recent press coverage, AI engines weight recency heavily
- Active LinkedIn company page, Copilot pulls heavily from this
- Quora and Reddit answers in your sector
The entity consistency principle. Across every platform where your business appears, the following must be identical: business name, website URL, address, phone number, description. Inconsistency teaches AI engines to distrust your entity data, which reduces citation frequency.
See Action 9 in the AEO checklist for the practical citation building steps.
AEO for Dubai Businesses, What's Different
The Dubai AI search reality. The UAE has among the highest smartphone penetration rates globally. AI search adoption among Dubai's professional audience, particularly in DIFC, Business Bay and JLT, is accelerating faster than most Western markets. Your buyers are already using ChatGPT and Perplexity to research before they contact you.
The bilingual consideration. Dubai's search market is primarily English for B2B and professional services. But Arabic AI search is growing, Gemini and GPT-4 handle Arabic natively. Businesses targeting UAE nationals should consider Arabic-language content structured for AEO.
Priority directories for Dubai AEO. For AI citation building in the UAE market, prioritise these in order:
- Clutch UAE (clutch.co/ae/agencies)
- Dubai Chamber directory
- Yellow Pages UAE
- GoodFirms with UAE location set
- Etisalat Business Directory
The district-level opportunity. Just as Dubai SEO requires district-level targeting (DIFC, Business Bay, JLT), AEO for Dubai businesses should include content that directly answers district-specific questions like "best marketing consultant in DIFC", "web design agency Business Bay", "SEO services JLT". These are lower competition AI citation opportunities than city-level terms.
The luxury sector opportunity. Dubai's luxury market, watches, hospitality, real estate, yacht charters, has almost no AEO-optimised content yet. The first luxury brand in each category to build structured, authoritative AEO content will own that answer space.

AEO for UK and Essex Businesses
The UK AI search reality. Google AI Overviews are now appearing for a significant proportion of UK searches, particularly for high-consideration, research-heavy queries like professional services, trades, health and aesthetics, and B2B decisions.
The local opportunity for Essex businesses. Most Essex businesses, tradesmen, aesthetics clinics, professional services, have zero AEO presence. The competitive bar for being cited in AI answers for local Essex queries is currently very low.
Google Business Profile. The single most important local AEO asset. Google AI Overviews pull heavily from Google Business Profile data for local queries. Full optimisation is non-negotiable.
Review volume on Google and Clutch. AI engines weight review volume and recency as trust signals. 50+ recent Google reviews puts you in contention for local AI citations.
Local press mentions. A mention in an Essex local newspaper, trade publication or regional business magazine creates a citation signal that no on-page optimisation replaces.
FAQ content for local queries. "How much does web design cost in Essex?" "What is the best SEO agency in Chelmsford?" "How do I find a good plumber in Brentwood?" Build FAQ content specifically around these questions with direct, structured answers.
See our digital marketing consultancy Essex page for more on the local market.
How to Measure AEO Performance
The honest problem. AEO measurement is genuinely harder than SEO measurement. There's no Google Search Console equivalent that tracks AI citations. But there are practical approaches.
Method 1, manual prompt auditing. Query each AI engine monthly with 20, 30 prompts your buyers are likely to use. Note which sources are cited and whether your brand appears. This is free, takes 30 minutes a month, and gives you direct competitive intelligence.
Method 2, Google AI Overview tracking. Google Search Console is beginning to show some AI Overview impression data. Monitor this alongside your traditional impressions and clicks, a falling CTR with stable or rising impressions is a zero-click search signal.
Method 3, referral traffic from AI sources. Check Google Analytics for referral traffic from perplexity.ai, bing.com/chat and other AI platforms. Perplexity in particular sends trackable referral traffic.
Method 4, brand search volume. Rising branded search volume, people Googling your company name, is an indirect signal that AI answers are creating awareness that then converts to direct searches.
The realistic expectation. AEO is a 3, 6 month investment like SEO. The citation signals you build now compound over time. Don't expect overnight results, expect compounding authority.
Common AEO Mistakes (And What to Do Instead)
Mistake: Treating AEO as separate from SEO
Instead, Build AEO on top of strong SEO foundations, they are not competing disciplines, they are sequential layers.
Mistake: Burying answers in context
Instead, Lead with the answer. Every section should open with its conclusion, not build toward it. AI engines extract the opening, not the middle.
Mistake: Ignoring third-party citations
Instead, Your website alone is not enough. AI engines triangulate trust from multiple sources. Clutch, Crunchbase, press coverage and directory listings all matter.
Mistake: Anonymous or corporate-voice content
Instead, Named authors with credentials get cited more. "Vicki Mahoney, Founder of Refrakt Digital" is more citable than "The Refrakt Team".
Mistake: Optimising for keywords instead of questions
Instead, Think in questions, not keywords. "What is the best SEO agency in Dubai" not "SEO agency Dubai". AI engines answer questions, structure your content around them.
Mistake: Building AEO once and forgetting it
Instead, AI citation patterns shift monthly. Run a 30-minute audit every month. What gets cited changes as models update and competitors optimise.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is AEO in simple terms?
AEO, Answer Engine Optimisation, is the practice of making sure your business gets cited when someone asks an AI tool like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews a question relevant to what you do. Instead of optimising to rank in a list of search results, you're optimising to be the source the AI quotes in its answer.
Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, but SEO is the foundation AEO is built on. SEO gets you ranked in Google's traditional results. AEO gets you cited in AI-generated answers. You need both. Strong SEO makes AEO significantly easier, AI engines trust content that Google already considers authoritative.
Does AEO work for small businesses?
Yes, and in many cases small businesses can outperform larger competitors on AEO because they can be more specific. A plumber in Brentwood who builds structured, authoritative content about plumbing in Essex can be cited for local queries even against national directories.
How long does AEO take to work?
Similar to SEO, 3, 6 months of consistent implementation before meaningful citation frequency builds. Some actions, like adding the 50-word rule to existing pages, can show results faster. LLM citation building through directories and press mentions compounds over time.
Is AEO relevant for Dubai businesses?
Yes, and it's a bigger opportunity in Dubai than in most markets because almost nobody has done it yet. Dubai's professional buyer audience is among the earliest adopters of AI search globally. The window to build AI citation authority in Dubai's key sectors is open right now.
What is the 50-word rule?
The 50-word rule is the practice of opening every key section of your content with a clean 40, 60 word direct answer to the question that section addresses. AI engines extract these opening answers directly. If your content buries the answer after several paragraphs, it won't get cited.
What is LLM citation building?
LLM citation building is the practice of getting your business mentioned consistently and accurately across the sources that AI engines pull from, Clutch, Crunchbase, press coverage, industry directories, Quora, Reddit, and authoritative third-party platforms. The more your brand appears in these sources, the more AI engines learn to trust and cite you.
How do I know if AI engines are already citing my business?
The simplest method is manual prompt auditing, query ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews monthly with 20, 30 questions your buyers are likely to ask. Note which businesses get cited and whether yours appears. This takes 30 minutes a month and is the most direct way to track your AEO performance.
