Glossary Term
Domain Authority
Domain Authority is a third-party score (most commonly from Moz or Ahrefs) that estimates how likely a website is to rank in Google, based largely on the quantity and quality of its backlinks.
What Is Domain Authority?
Domain Authority is not a Google metric, Google doesn't use a single score like this internally. It's a tool-vendor estimate of overall site strength, usually on a 0 to 100 scale, calculated from the backlink profile, the age of the domain, and historical ranking patterns. Moz uses 'Domain Authority' (DA), Ahrefs uses 'Domain Rating' (DR), Semrush uses 'Authority Score'. They're not directly comparable but they all measure roughly the same thing: how much link equity the site has accumulated. Building DA means earning quality backlinks from authoritative sites in your niche, publishing content that other people genuinely want to cite, and avoiding the spammy link-building shortcuts that get sites penalised.
Why Does Domain Authority Matter for Your Business?
DA is a useful benchmarking tool, especially for comparing your site against competitors and tracking progress over time. A site with DA 45 will generally outrank a site with DA 20 for the same keyword if all else is equal. But DA on its own ranks nothing, content, intent match, and technical health still need to be in place.
Domain Authority in Practice
A Dubai property developer with a DA of 18 competing against established portals with DA 70+ focused on building authoritative backlinks through original market reports, expert commentary in UAE press, and partnerships with industry bodies. Over 12 months their DA rose to 35 and their organic visibility for off-plan queries grew by 4x.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Domain Authority a Google ranking factor?
+
Not directly. Google has confirmed it doesn't use Moz's DA score. But the underlying signal DA tries to measure, link equity, is a major ranking factor.
How do I increase my Domain Authority?
+
Earn high-quality backlinks from authoritative sites in your niche. Publish content worth citing. Get featured in industry press. Avoid paid or spammy links that can damage your profile.
What DA score do I need to rank?
+
There's no fixed threshold. Many high-intent local queries are winnable with DA 20 to 30. Competitive national or commercial queries often require DA 50+, but topical authority and intent match can compensate for lower DA in niche categories.
